Old Newsletters:
We have been fortunate to find a treasure trove of old band newsletters that we have placed here.
Some of them were not clearly dated, so identifying even the year that they were sent is difficult without at least a modicum of detective work, although many were obviously prepared around the mid 1990's.
Others were more clearly dated.
We hope you will enjoy reading these old band newsletters.

Jim Shea Newsletters:
In order to give credit where credit is due, some explanation needs to be added here before anyone reads any of the following documents.
The batch listed below were written by Jim Shea, who was the bass drummer with the band for many years.
As a hint as to how important that is, Sousa is said to have recruited percussionists, especially bass drummers, with the same care as he recruited his soloists on the other instruments.
As you will read, Jim was also certainly one of the band's biggest supporters.
Doing a newsletter is almost always a thankless job, but Jim did it for years.
He always greeted new members on their first practice and made sure he got their contact info for the band's records.
In a large group like The Circleville Pumpkin Show Community Band one band member may not know everyone else in the band.
I confess that I am certainly guilty of this.
After all, when a musician first gets to practice (hopefully EARLY):
Then, when practice actually starts, other conversation needs to stop and the band needs to listen to the Director.
Talking to someone even 2 chairs down is difficult, and hardly ever do you get a chance to talk to someone in another section.
After practice, everyone is pretty much doing all the above tasks in reverse order, and then planning for their trip home, or to their next obligation.
But, Jim was so outgoing, and such a cheerleader for the band, that EVERYBODY knew Jim.
Unfortunately, Jim is gone now, but now you can kind of get to know him as the band knew him by reading his newsletters.

After all, when a musician first gets to practice (hopefully EARLY):
- There is music to pick up, set up, and organize for that day's practice session,
- The instrument needs to come out of the case and get assembled,
- Valves and Trombone slides need oiled,
- Reeds need moistened,
- and everyone needs to warm-up and tune-up...we hope.
