2018: A Year of Memories and Celebrating The Band's 40-Year Members
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INTRODUCTION:
Since The Circleville Pumpkin Show Community Band started in 1979, it has counted 2018 as the 40th summer that it has been performing.
Accordingly, the band checked with the musicians who had performed with the band during any part of 2018 in order to identify those musicians who were also with the band in 1979.
Naturally, memories fade from events that long ago, so a search was also made of the available documents that could have helped identify those original musicians.
But in doing this research, it was unfortunately found that 1979 was well before:
However, this total research process WAS able to identify 5 musicians who performed with the band both in 2018 as its 40th summer, as well as in its inaugural year of 1979.
In some cases, there may have been some gaps in performing during that 40-year span as life and work schedules and responsibilities constantly changed, but these musicians were still identified as being active in the band both at its start as well at some point during its 40th anniversary year.
What an achievement!
And what a record of dedication to both the band, and in giving back to the community in this manner!
The text below was placed on this web site earlier this year on a different page.
However, we wanted to keep this information on the web site in perpetuity as a permanent marker of the band's contributions to the community over this 40-year period, as well of the dedication of these musicians to both the community AND to the band.

Naturally, memories fade from events that long ago, so a search was also made of the available documents that could have helped identify those original musicians.
But in doing this research, it was unfortunately found that 1979 was well before:
- YouTube,
- The popularity of VHS tapes,
- The term, and possibilities of, "social media",
- Smart phones, and
- Today's seemingly incessant interests by many to want to capture every daily experience by both picture and video.
However, this total research process WAS able to identify 5 musicians who performed with the band both in 2018 as its 40th summer, as well as in its inaugural year of 1979.

2018 End-of-the-Year Update:
Recognition of Those Who Helped Start The Music Playing
As the band closes out 2018, effectively marking the end of its 40th summer of performing, there is at least one piece of business that certainly deserves mentioning.
In other pages on this website, you can find information about how and when the band started, where the members come from, the names of the places where the band has performed, and the nature of the events held there.
You can also find information about the band's other activities in the community, such as co-sponsoring the Circleville TUBACHRISTMAS, and even awarding scholarships to area High School Seniors in order to assist with the expenses of their continued education. To date, the band has awarded several thousands of dollars to deserving area graduates.
However, none of what the band is and does today would be possible without the selflessness of those musicians who were a part of that initial band in 1979.
While trying to identify everyone who may have been a part of the 1979 band is probably an insurmountable task, and unfortunately we know that many of them have since passed, we HAVE been able to identify 5 musicians still playing with the band in 2018 who were also a part of the 1979 group:
1. Gary Dean: First Director, now Assistant Director, and Saxophone
2. David WInner: At least an Assistant Director in 1979, Trombone, and now Full-Time Director since 2006
3. John Swingle: Trombone
4. Barb Crist: Bb Clarinet and Bass Clarinet
5. Ruth Holt: Bb Clarinet and Bass Clarinet
These people certainly have the appreciation of the current band musicians, as well as all past musicians, for their initial efforts in starting the band, along with their continued dedication for performing with the band into its 40th summer.
THANK YOU!
